Blurring the boundaries between classy neo-soul and rootsy folk-pop comes 21-year-old singer-songwriter Justin Nozuka with his new album 'You I Wind Land and Sea' on [PIAS] Recordings.
Previously compared to artists including Paolo Nutini, John Legend and Ben Harper, Justin Nozuka highlights his rich vocal timbre - a raw, emotive voice reminiscent of a Chicago soul veteran - with a collection of memorable and immediately accessible songs that demonstrate his growing accomplishment as a writer.
Recorded last year with producer Bill Bell (Jason Mraz), 'You I Wind Land and Sea' opens with 'Gray', a slice of mellow baroque folk that escalates into a stirring crescendo of impassioned vocals and fiery dynamics. Having delivered such a compelling mission statement, Nozuka visits a varied range of emotions that show his musical versatility.
'Soulless Man' introduces itself as tender piano ballad that progresses into altogether more powerful terrain, 'Carried You' features a euphoric, upbeat groove that's perfectly suited as a summer soundtrack, while the album's title song offers a heady mix of understated funk and upbeat grooves.
"There was definitely more of an idea of what kind of sound I wanted," says Nozuka of the differences between his new album and his debut. "I wanted it to be vely natural and it had to sound like us, "he adds, crediting the influence of his live band. "I wanted to be able to hear and feel humans behind the creation of it all, as opposed to something that was 'hit' driven."
Influenced by classic vocalists including Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker, Lauryn Hill, Michael lackson and Stevie Wonder, Justin Nozuka was born in New York and raised in Canada. He started performing when first at school and had sparked the interest of the music industry before even finishing his exams. His 2007 debut album 'Holly' reached #6 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and earned widespread acclaim including a 2008 Juno award nomination for New Artist of the Year.
Nozuka has also become a mainstay on American television with his many appearances including VH1's You Oughta Know, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America NOW and the mtvU Woodie Awards.
Nozuka's touring schedule has included dates with John Cale, Ziggy Marley and Crowded House, as weil as a few select introductory shows in the UK.
